Problem:

While researching agriculture within the village of Maourolo we discovered a very laborious

and inefficient method of farming.  They grow sorghum, maize and millet as a form of

subsistence farming, meaning they grow only enough crop to support and feed the village

members.  The last problem is the problem we have decided to address which is the lack of

nutrition in the villagers diet. Their form of farming is only provides them with food it does

not provide them with sufficient nutrients.

Solution:

The plan is to help introduce bio-genetically improved sorghum seeds into the Mali culture

through the African based company African Biofortified Sorghum Project. We will also be

looking to educate them on the best way to grow the new crop as well as the benefits. The

introduction would increase the intake of nutrients as well as protien which is not provided

in the culture from regular sorghum.  The new sorghum will also provide greater yeilds but not

a significant amount, although every little bit counts.  This will allow them to generate some

more income.

The sorghum we have researched contains almost twice the amount of protien per cup also it

includes more natural fat and a significant amount of iron.  These are all going to have

positive effects on the Bobo tribe's health and and directly impact their lives.  Our goal is to

improve the lives of the people within the Maourolo village by providing ideas as to how their

agriculture can be improved.  We are not looking to do it all for them but to enable and

empower them in their situation, making it possible for them to improve their agriculture.
